Comments & Ratings about this product
I purchased this remote for my A7R3 and A73 cameras. Once connected, it worked well. It is slightly more expensive than third-party options, but I believe the extra cost is justified.
Pros:
- The build quality of this remote feels superior to third-party alternatives. It has a high-quality plastic construction.
- The buttons are comprehensive and useful.
- Connectivity is great under optimal conditions.
Cons:
- Occasionally, the connectivity is less effective in open areas or when there are many electronics around.
- I have concerns about the durability of the soft plastic buttons. I would have preferred harder plastic buttons.
- It would be beneficial if this item came with an attachment ring or something similar since it is small and easy to misplace.
I should have known better before purchasing this infrared remote. Although the reviews were mostly positive and the Q&As indicated that it could be used from behind the camera, it did not meet my expectations for landscape photography. The Sony A7rIII has its infrared receiver on the front of the camera, which means that it generally works well indoors where the signal can bounce off surfaces. However, when I tried using it outdoors for landscape photography from behind the camera, it simply did not work. I had to contort myself around the camera in order to fire the shutter, which was far from ideal. After attempting to use it for three photo sessions, I have now relegated it to my unused remote drawer. Overall, this infrared remote proved to be a waste of both time and money for landscape imaging purposes.
I purchased this device to remotely trigger my camera's shutter while it was mounted on the front windshield of my car. Unfortunately, it does not work in this configuration as it needs to face the front of the camera to function properly. However, it still has its uses. It is a convenient alternative to using the self-timer feature because you can choose the perfect moment when you are in frame. Additionally, it offers more flexibility than a cable release as it allows you to be away from the camera for adjustments or prop movements. I believe this device has great potential for capturing candid shots of people and animals. Please note that you may need to select the "Shutter fires with lens removed" option in your camera's menu for this unit to work correctly. Also, keep in mind that it appears to be constantly powered on and only the "fire shutter" button is available for control, while other buttons seem reserved for TV viewing selection purposes.
