Comments & Ratings about this product
Released in 1950, this British film offers a realistic portrayal of the war without glorifying it or promoting War Bonds. It focuses on the experiences of recruits in the Guards Armoured Division, providing insight into their training period and featuring characters like 'Trained Soldier' who shares tips on maintaining equipment. The strict RSM adds to the authenticity, often demanding haircuts as punishment. The story progresses to the challenges faced during the Normandy campaign and the tragic outcome of Market Garden's single road attack. This film avoids artificial computer graphics, exaggerated heroics, and excessive explosions, instead offering an honest depiction of a tank crew's life during WWII.
I really enjoyed this film for several reasons. Firstly, the high level of realism was impressive. Additionally, the story itself is not widely known, which added to its appeal. As someone with a background in tanks, I particularly appreciate stories about tank crews and it was refreshing to see British troops using Shermans, which is not often depicted in films. Overall, the film was entertaining and had a compelling storyline.
While not on the same scale as Saving Private Ryan in terms of budget and special effects, this film does utilize a significant amount of WWII equipment and tanks, as well as incorporating real footage. As a result, it successfully captures an authentic atmosphere. The low-key style and somewhat stilted acting may not be for everyone, but they do contribute to conveying the realities of war such as repetitive training, intense combat, and unpredictable loss of life. Overall, despite its flaws, this film manages to immerse viewers in its dramatic narrative.
