Comments & Ratings about this product
Despite being directed by John Ford, this western falls short and is somewhat disappointing. However, it remains watchable primarily due to the talented performances of its stars James Stewart, Richard Widmark, and Linda Cristal.
This movie is definitely strange, but it's still worth owning. To fully understand the movie, I recommend reading McBride's biography of Ford and then checking out Frankel's book on The Searchers. Frankel explores Ford's connection to Cynthia Ann Parker and her son Quanna Parker, revealing a complex and dark history. Watching these two films together reveals Ford's conflicting feelings towards America's destructive treatment of Native Americans. He acknowledges this darkness in one film and offers a path to redemption, but in the later film, he portrays a more truthful sense of inevitability without redemption. It highlights how America absorbs this darkness and moves forward without remorse or awareness.
This film has the potential to be great with its two Western stars, Richard Widmark and James Stewart, and a decent plot. However, it falls short of expectations. The serious premise of rescuing white prisoners from Comanches is overshadowed by attempts at humor that don't quite work. The inclusion of a fat sergeant character reminiscent of 'Zorro' feels out of place. If the film had focused on either being a serious drama or a comedy, it may have been more successful. Unfortunately, trying to do both results in disappointment.
