The European Union is striving to promote economic and ecological efficiency in road traffic, increase road safety, and provide consumers with more product transparency and decision-making assistance with this regulation. Unfortunately, experts have already criticised the EU Tyre Label for only displaying a few product characteristics. Apart from rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling noise, tyres have many more important and safety-relevant product characteristics such as aquaplaning properties, driving stability, service life, braking properties on dry and wet roads, and behaviour in wintry conditions. The EU Tyre Label should take these additional characteristics into consideration in order to ensure the safety and efficiency of road traffic.
Tyre manufacturers understand the importance of test results from various institutions and journals for the end consumer. These tests focus on additional safety-relevant product characteristics beyond the EU standard qualifications for tyre labelling, which are always important for the final customer. At the same time, the Michelin Group is committed to sustainability and environmental protection, as modern mobility must be sustainable and not detrimental to the environment. Every year, the Michelin Group produces more than 178 million tires in 68 production facilities in 17 countries and operates sales networks in more than 170 countries.
Michelin is a global leader in tire innovation and performance, employing 111,700 people worldwide and proudly owning one of the oldest, most iconic trademarks in the world – the legendary Michelin Man. We are committed to the concept of MICHELIN Total Performance, which is the rigorous standard of combining a number of performance characteristics into a tire to achieve optimal results. This philosophy is applied not only in the development of our standard products, but also in motorsports. Our tire innovations are designed to reduce the burden on the environment, drivers, and businesses.
To gain a deeper understanding of the conditions tires are exposed to in everyday use, Michelin launched the Road Usage Lab in the summer of 2014. This unique research project involved equipping 3,000 vehicles in Europe with special measurement devices to record data about the tires' use. The valuable insights gained from this project are being used to inform the development of future tire models, ensuring they are better suited to the needs of real drivers.
