Mirta, a young Moldovan woman living in Rome and searching for work, has left behind a world of poverty and suffering, along with her son Ilie, the only thing that brings her joy and support through life's new sacrifices and humiliations. She has taken care of several people as they neared death, including Nunzio, Mrs. Mazzanti (who passed away on a winter night before Christmas but whose family still celebrated with a tree, gifts, and panettone), Olivia, and now Eleonora. These are all individuals who have been defeated by life and time, often abandoned by their own families.

Mirta takes care of them without knowing them, accompanying them to death through shared intimacy in daily acts of care and attention. "In despair, we are all the same," says Eleonora, a wealthy woman with a history of beauty, to Mirta, who is striving with all her energy to build a future of serenity for herself and her son. This intense and contradictory relationship between two women - one alone and at the bottom, the other rich but also alone and at the end - brings out the portrait of a society that seems no longer to know tenderness.
