Just Kids

Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe were two of the most influential artists of their time. Bound together by their innocence and enthusiasm, they explored the city of New York from Coney Island to Forty-Second Street, eventually finding their way to the iconic Max's Kansas City. There, they encountered the likes of Andy Warhol and his entourage, and in 1969, the two set up camp at the Hotel Chelsea, joining a vibrant community of famous and infamous artists, influential creatives, and colorful fringe characters. Together, they would evolve as poets and performers, and Mapplethorpe would direct his highly provocative style toward photography.

In the midst of a revolutionary era, two kids made a promise to look out for each other. As the boundaries between poetry, rock and roll, art, and sexual politics were being challenged and pushed, these two kids were determined to stand by each other no matter what. Just Kids is the story of their journey through this tumultuous time, and the bond they formed that would last a lifetime.
