I've been eagerly anticipating the release of this amazing film on blu ray, and I'm pleasantly surprised that it finally happened. However, the transfer is not as flawless as I had hoped. Sometimes older films can appear over restored, if you know what I mean. Despite this, the BFI blu ray edition is definitely worth it for the bonus features alone.
What's even more impressive is that this film was made with non-actors, which adds to its astonishing quality. Everything about it works perfectly - from the seamless transitions between different time periods to the captivating music (including a Tippett piece that was new to me) and the stunning photography (which seems to have been achieved without additional lighting). The commentary by 'old Tom' also adds depth to the viewing experience.
Akenfield has always had a profound emotional impact on me; it never fails to bring tears to my eyes because of its sheer beauty in every aspect. It serves as a eulogy for a lost era and refreshingly doesn't romanticize or idealize the working class. Truly a classic film.
