I was initially expecting a spy story with Daniel Craig's 'James Bond' look, but I was pleasantly surprised by this political thriller set in the 70s. The film captures the free-wheeling and corrupt atmosphere of Boris Yeltsin's era. The musical cast and actors are excellent, making it a great source of entertainment for an evening. It is astonishing that this film did not premiere in cinemas, given its quality. Kudos to the creators and actors for delivering such a European-style film. Most of the actors are Russian, adding an interesting and unusual perspective to shots from Moscow.
This well-constructed thriller is made even more intriguing by two elements. Firstly, Daniel Craig delivers a captivating performance before his iconic role as Bond, facing off against Soviet-style adversaries in a race to uncover long-held secrets. Secondly, the narrative takes place in post-Soviet Russia, adding a sense of danger and uncertainty to the plot. The country is depicted as being controlled by gangster capitalism and lacking a clear direction for its future identity. As Craig's historian character becomes entangled in events, not only does he uncover hidden history but also faces ruthless attempts to revive past structures.
