I found this documentary on the Bolshoi Ballet to be incredibly interesting and surprisingly candid. It delves into the secretive world of the ballet, capturing a pivotal moment when a Director returned to work after being attacked with acid by a fellow member of the ballet. The film effectively portrays how this incident divided the company and highlights the significant role politics plays within the Bolshoi, especially with a newly appointed managing director chosen by the Kremlin.
While I thoroughly enjoyed watching this documentary, I would have liked to see more focus on the lives of the dancers themselves - their daily routines, how ballet takes a toll on them, and other aspects of their personal experiences. Although these elements were touched upon, it felt like there was more emphasis on the political angle.
Overall, I highly recommend watching this captivating documentary. Just keep in mind that there are subtitles throughout and minimal narration over dialogue scenes.
