The cinematography in this film is stylish and expansive, creating a big screen feel. The menacing and mysterious score adds to the suspense, reminiscent of Hitchcock films. However, despite having the potential to be a psychological thriller, something falls short. The central character, Pinkie, is the weak link in the cast and doesn't quite deliver. It feels like a small screen drama given cinematic treatment but not fully elevated. Additionally, there is a lack of background on Pinkie at the start of the movie which hinders our understanding of his motivations. On a positive note, Helen Mirren and John Hurt give impeccable performances as always. The 1960s setting is authentic with superb attention to detail that brings that era to life on screen.
