I really enjoyed "Captured" a lot. The film itself is excellent and the picture quality is up to the BFI's usual high standards. It's basically a remake of the 1954 Ronald Reagan film "Prisoner of War". While "Captured" is superior, many scenes are almost identical, even word for word. I'm surprised that there isn't much mention of this similarity online or in the accompanying booklet for this bluray. Initially, I thought "Prisoner of War" was the copy, a quick American remake because "Captured" couldn't be released, but then I realized it actually came out five years earlier. However, my preference still lies with "Captured", mainly because it features Wilfrid Brambell...
I highly recommend giving this BluRay 5 stars to counteract a review that unfairly criticized the packaging instead of focusing on the movie itself. This BFI Flipside release is truly captivating and strangely mesmerizing, with an intriguing featurette that has been kept hidden until now due to security reasons. Despite being made in the fifties, it is well-crafted and delivers a powerful portrayal of torture, earning its 15 rating. I encourage you to purchase this along with other Flipside releases and disregard any negative comments about the packaging. Just to clarify, I am not affiliated with BFI in any way.
This 1959 film was created as a training aid for British soldiers, depicting the treatment of captured British soldiers by the People's Army of China during the Korean War. It is a very authentic portrayal, using real actors instead of makeup to portray Chinese characters. Despite being only 64 minutes long, it is intense and realistic. The film was restricted to military personnel only, adding to its credibility. While it contains depictions of torture and brainwashing, it is not excessively violent but still leaves a strong impact. Shot in black and white with relatively unknown actors, keen observers may recognize an early role for Wilfred Bramble before his famous Steptoe character. Overall, this film is highly recommended for those interested in both film and military history due to its fascinating content.
