While I do enjoy the Rebus novels, I can understand the appeal of exploring a different perspective. However, I did manage to read through the entire book.
The book "Doors Open" has received mixed reviews, with some criticizing it for not being a "Rebus" novel. However, I believe that Ian Rankin wrote this as a light entertainment piece to break away from his usual gloomy style. If you approach the book with this mindset, you will likely enjoy it as I did. It is a fun and far-fetched story with an excellent twist, reminiscent of the Ealing Comedy film "The Lavender Hill Mob," which Rankin references briefly. The intention behind the book is to provide light entertainment while also exploring how people change and develop under stress. Overall, it is a lightweight but enjoyable read that I would give four stars to. Keep in mind that if you are looking for heavyweight detective fiction, this may not be the right choice for you.
