The film adaptation of this long book falls short due to the omission of crucial elements in order to fit the story into a shorter format. As a result, the storyline feels disjointed and fails to evoke fear or horror as intended. Additionally, the outdated special effects from the early 80s further hinder its impact.
However, thanks to Alice Kriege's outstanding performance, this film manages to avoid complete failure and has become somewhat of a classic. Kriege possesses all the necessary qualities to flawlessly portray the vengeful spirit of a murdered young woman - stunning beauty, a commanding voice, and impeccable self-control that adds a slightly sinister touch. Her talent extends beyond this role as she continues to excel in portraying complex villains in various other projects.
Despite its flaws, this film remains one of my favorites solely because of Kriege's exceptional portrayal of the main character.
This horror movie is a classic and exudes sophistication. It creates a chilling atmosphere that captivates viewers from the opening scene, which features a death that will leave an indelible mark on your memory. The film successfully combines sustained menace with well-executed jump scares to keep audiences on edge.
Visually, the movie is stunning, thanks to the inclusion of impressive Albert Whitlock matte paintings and gruesomely realistic make-up effects by Dick Smith. While there isn't excessive gore, the film still manages to deliver some shocking moments. Additionally, Alice Krige's captivating performance adds to the overall appeal of the film as she takes on the role of its main protagonist.
The autumn/winter settings and small town ambiance are perfectly suited for this story. The combination of creepy old buildings and a mix of period and modern-day elements further enhance the eerie atmosphere. With each turn, you never know what awaits you next.
This movie is ideal for a spooky treat on Christmas night or Boxing Day once the kids are asleep. It has all the ingredients to give you a good fright! He he he...
Reviewing the region B Blu-ray of this film, it may seem like not much happens as a few old men pass away. However, the story will keep you engaged and curious to find out why. While modern audiences might not recognize the acting talent of these older actors and be deterred by the slow pace, it is worth noting that this film offers more satisfaction than "Woman in Black," and not just because Alice Krige's beauty shines through. The Blu-ray edition includes a high-quality print of the film along with a director's commentary and an interview with Alice Krige, among other bonus features.
