During Roman times, gladiators held a high status and were valued by both their masters and the public. They entertained the crowd in the arena without risking their lives, while also earning wagers for their masters. Wealthy individuals provided patronage to gladiators, and many of them retired outside of the arena after successful careers. Gladiator academies encouraged this retirement goal to serve their own interests, and fights to the death were only allowed if there was ample reward. This resulted in competitions taking place in large arenas, as depicted in films.
