My mother used to dislike black and white films, but I can only imagine how she would react to the enthusiastic audience for movies like "Hell Is A City" today. Alec Baldwin once said that all the best films were made in black and white, and I wholeheartedly agree, although there are a few exceptions. This fast-paced police thriller showcases the talents of Stanley Baker and a stellar supporting cast without relying on computer graphics or special effects. The film is violent for its time, with atmospheric and effective music. If you enjoy gritty old movies, this one is a must-watch. It serves as a reminder of how great films could be made in the past without modern technology, while also showcasing excellent acting. "Hell Is A City" is an impressive British take on the cops and robbers genre that will captivate any film buff. Personally, I particularly enjoyed seeing the old cars featured in the movie. Don't miss out on this gem!
I absolutely loved Hell Is A City, a gritty detective film from 1960. Stanley Baker was superb as DI Martineau, who becomes obsessed with catching the brilliantly played John Crawford as Starling. The rooftop scene at the end had me on the edge of my seat, and it almost cost Martineau his life. However, in the end, Starling is caught. I particularly enjoyed the night scenes in Manchester, where Martineau reflects on his life and marriage to Julia, played by Maxine Audley. Overall, this is definitely my favorite Stanley Baker movie of all time.
