This pop album is the ultimate blend of catchy, cool, and perfection. It subtly incorporates influences from Burt Bacharach, Scott Walker, Stereolab's avant-pop, and 90s euro dance to create a musical amalgam that is irresistible. However, its sophistication and intelligence make it unlikely to be played on mainstream radio in today's world. Instead, it serves as an esoteric alternative for music enthusiasts who appreciate its brilliance.
The new album from Saint Etienne is a great companion to Sarah Cracknell's recent solo album. However, I want to caution you about the packaging. While it looks nice, be extremely careful when removing the CD from the tight cardboard pouch. I have yet to find a copy that isn't scuffed, although they are still playable for now. Normally, I would recommend buying the Japanese edition because their packaging standards are higher, but unfortunately, it is identical to the U.K. edition and also scuffed. Regardless, I highly recommend getting this charming album in any format you prefer, just be cautious if you're buying the CD version.
Saint Etienne never fails to impress. It has been four years since their last album, with Sarah also releasing her solo album "Red Kite" in between. I must say, this trio has not lost their touch and are highly underrated. In my humble opinion, they should have achieved much more success. For us die-hard Saint Etienne fans, this is a must-buy.
