This is one of the best new releases of 2014 and stands out as the finest Polish film I've seen in years. It captures the essence of early 1960s films with its stunning monochrome visuals and Academy ratio. In just 80 minutes, it delves into various themes such as the aftermath of the holocaust, Polish-Jewish relations, Catholicism versus Communism, a clash between two contrasting women who are aunt and niece, and explores the nature of religious vows. The performances are flawless, and the cinematography is breathtaking. It rightfully won Best Film at the 2013 London festival where I first discovered it. While revealing too much about the plot would spoil it for others, I must mention that this Polish edition comes with optional English subtitles. The ending may be open to interpretation for some but was clear enough for me. Highly recommended - I even bought a copy for a friend!
The story of "Anna" is understated but captivating. It follows a young woman who has lived in a convent and wants to become a nun. Before she can do so, she is instructed by the mother superior to visit her only relative, an aunt whom she has never met. The unfolding drama is both fascinating and moving, set in post-World War II Poland in the early sixties. The monochrome cinematography adds to the bleakness of the scenes. With minimal dialogue, much can be inferred from subtle movements or actions. At just 1 hour and 22 minutes long, it's a concise film. Although the English subtitles occasionally hindered understanding, a quick rewind resolved any confusion.
