Comments & Ratings about this product
I read this book because it was recommended to me after reading Donna Tartt's The Secret History. While I enjoyed it on its own, I found it disappointing that the story felt very similar to The Secret History but with less character development. It even mentions on the front cover that it is "like The Secret History," but surprisingly, Donna Tartt is not credited as an influence in the author notes. As a fan of Donna Tartt, this would have annoyed me! However, if you enjoy dark academia themes and haven't read The Secret History yet, you will probably still enjoy this book.
I felt like I was transported back to my younger years studying A' level English Lit at times. This book gradually grew on me, with each "Act" and a surprising twist at the end. It's a mix of Harry Potter and The Dead Poet Society, with characters that reflect their roles in the school performances. There's Oliver, the tragic hero; the villain; the seductress; the best friend; the druggie; and the gay character, all adding an element of unrequited love. Although it was initially tedious, I'm glad I stuck with it. While I didn't know much about Shakespeare or his plays in detail, it didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. If you can push through some challenging prose, this is definitely an interesting read.
This comment may be divisive depending on your opinion of liberal Shakespearean quotes. Excited for a thorough discussion.
