I believe that Seven Samurai is Kurosawa's greatest film, as it is beautifully paced, funny, and profound. Its significant influence speaks for itself. However, my personal favorite is Ikiru, possibly because I can relate to the main character being desk-bound like myself. Prior to watching the film, I only had a basic understanding of the story, so I was pleasantly surprised by its brilliant non-chronological order. The cuts to the funeral scenes where colleagues reflect on the hero's life and death may appear to interrupt the flow of the narrative; however, they effectively prompt viewers to question their own perspective on work and life. Overall, Ikiru is an exceptional piece of art that not only entertains but also provokes deep thought.
I love this film, but it's disappointing that it's not available on Blu-ray in Britain. Even though I have a multi region player, it's frustrating that region 1 discs often don't work. I really hope Criterion releases a region 2 version soon. Overall, I give the film five stars, but deducted one for its unavailability.
