After reading the books and watching the TV shows, it's clear that the stories were toned down for family viewing. The character of Dexter's Morse is much more complex and interesting in the books compared to the grumpy old man portrayed on TV. The mysteries are always well thought out, even those created by the production staff rather than Dexter himself. However, when rewatching the early episodes now, it's evident that some of them are poorly made with noticeable mistakes like a cigarette getting longer during an interview or a cassette deck playing music without turning its spools. It would have been nice if the DVD engineers had reformatted the shows for widescreen using the original color film stock instead of providing low-resolution versions meant for RF broadcast and VHS tapes. Despite these flaws, I highly recommend reading the books for a better experience overall.
When Morse was on TV, I used to watch it with my dad who has since passed away. As an adult, I rediscovered the show and now enjoy spending a few hours watching an episode. The box and discs are in great condition and play well. Having them easily accessible is wonderful. I also purchased the Lewis and Endeavour series. Once this pandemic is over, all I need is a trip to Oxford!
