I enjoyed the idea of a musical fairytale set in the woods, but unfortunately, the film failed to hold my attention throughout. However, the actors delivered decent performances.

I'm unsure if Sondheim musicals successfully transition from stage to film. There seems to be a loss of the great man's subtlety and wit in this production, which is also evident in other film adaptations. While not a bad film, it's hard to believe that it originated from a highly successful and long-running stage show. Similar to "Sweeney Todd," there is too much focus on cinematic effects rather than the music and lyrics. It serves as a decent representation of Sondheim's work, but I would prefer a faithful stage production instead.
