In this non-musical adaptation set in post-revolution France, Anthony Perkins (known for his role in Psycho) portrays the relentless Javert, determined to capture the fugitive Jean Valjean. Initially imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, Javert makes Valjean's life unbearable and continuously extends his sentence. However, Valjean manages to escape and assumes a new identity, living an honorable life as a free man. After five years, their paths cross again, igniting the true essence of the story.
I purchased this DVD for my husband, and we both had a great time watching it together. My husband especially enjoyed this particular version. Personally, I still prefer the book because it delves into the stories of "minor" characters that add depth to the overall narrative, which can be difficult for a film adaptation to capture fully. However, if you're someone who prefers watching over reading, I would definitely recommend giving this DVD a try.
