I recently re-read Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park', which is said to be her favorite novel. I had previously watched a couple of modern adaptations that seemed to force the Regency era values and attitudes into relevance for today's audience. In search of a more authentic version, I ordered this one. However, it may have been too authentic as the actors seemed to be reciting lines rather than truly acting. Despite having a talented cast, the overall performance felt stiff and unexciting, leaving me slightly disappointed. Nonetheless, it is still worth watching, but there is room for a perfect remake in the future.
This comment is a review of a 30-year-old BBC production of Jane Austen's novel. The reviewer mentions that the production values and direction are not impressive, and compares it to more recent adaptations which are more engaging. They also mention that the actress Silvestre Le Touzel is well cast as the main character Fanny Price, but criticize the casting choice of Billie Piper in a previous adaptation.
Rewritten:
This review is for fans of Jane Austen who enjoy in-depth analysis. It discusses the story of a principled girl from a poor background who interacts with a wealthy but morally questionable family and their friends. Both sides' strengths and weaknesses are explored, leading to virtue being rewarded in the end. While this 30-year-old BBC production stays true to the original novel, its production values and direction may seem ordinary compared to more recent adaptations. Early videotaped TV dramas like this one can feel flat and less engaging than newer filmed versions. However, if you're an Austen fan, it's worth watching for Silvestre Le Touzel's portrayal of Fanny Price as our humble heroine and Bernard Hepton's excellent performance as Sir Thomas. In contrast, another adaptation miscast Billie Piper – known for her beauty – in an unsuitable role.
I purchased this for a friend who is a huge Jane Austen fan, and she was delighted with it. The film goes into great detail, which is possible because it is over four hours long. While it may not have the same level of glamour as the Billie Piper version, it has its own charm from being made in the early 80s when production styles were different. Some of the acting can come across as stiff, and not all of the cast members are conventionally attractive like in modern adaptations. However, at its core, the story revolves around a young girl from a poor family with an alcoholic father who is sent to live with her wealthy relatives. It beautifully portrays her transformation into an impressive individual admired by all. Ultimately, this film serves as Jane Austen's insightful exploration of personal development and psychology.
