This version of the books has its advantages, as it was filmed in Rye using Lamb House and a fairly good replica of the garden room (which was destroyed during WWII). However, Anna Chancellor's portrayal of Lucia is disappointing, Miranda Richardson's performance as Mapp is laughable, and Steve Pemberton is only somewhat believable as Georgie. The more you watch it, the more you will miss the talented cast from the 1985 adaptation.
I am a huge fan of E.F. Benson's books and writing. He perfectly captures the interwar period and portrays a specific social class with great accuracy. His characters are incredibly well-developed, and in my opinion, his observations on social norms are just as sharp as those made by Austen. The humor is present throughout the entire story, and this BBC three-part adaptation does justice to the lavish production.
I had watched a series based on Benson's work years ago, and I can confidently say that this adaptation is just as good. Pemberton truly embodies the eccentric character of Georgie, nailing every aspect from mannerisms to dress to speech. The depiction of bitchiness, social climbing, and class divisions is done exceptionally well, staying true to the original story.
This three-part series is one that I will definitely watch again because each time I do, I discover something new and different about it. It is disappointing that there are no extras included with this BBC production; however, this is not uncommon for their productions.
Overall, watching this adaptation was an absolute joy for me.
