I recently received Mid-August Lunch in the mail after waiting for a while. I finally watched it and I was not disappointed. This film perfectly complements my interest in learning Italian (specifically the Roma dialect) and gives me insight into how people communicate in this region of Italy. Pranzo di Ferragosto is an excellent film that may leave you wanting more, but it also allows you to reflect on what might have happened next with these fascinating characters. I would love to meet director Gianni Di Gregorio, share a drink or two, and discuss potential story ideas for his future projects.
This comment describes a hilarious and well-executed portrayal of an Italian man in his middle age, exploring his dynamic with his mother and her friends.
It's no surprise that this film received numerous accolades. The story is both gentle and sharp, showcasing perceptive insights. The cast delivers an incredible performance, especially considering they are not professional actors. Aunty Maria's portrayal in the kitchen was spot-on, capturing the essence of a slightly eccentric elderly widow with her rambling conversations about food and family. The acting throughout the film is truly remarkable. I haven't seen another recent film where the characters felt so authentic. This is definitely a movie to enjoy with a glass of red wine and friends who appreciate subtle humor and well-developed characters.
