I watched this when it first aired, and it left a lasting impression on me, as it did with many others. It is not just strange; it also aims to be a poetic and symbolic piece of television that explores various themes such as Britain's past and present, the eternal and the transient, the personal and the collective, Christianity and paganism. Nowadays, we have great TV shows, but what sets apart programs like Penda's Fen, some Play For Todays, and many children's shows from that time is their ability to transport you to another world while still feeling authentic despite their limited production values. I doubt that TV like this would be made today; however, series like The Leftovers are equally haunting. The 70s ethos of creating without concern for what the BBC executives or even viewers think is unique. Penda's Fen was a rare gem that barely made it through at the time! Thank you for making an 11-year-old think deeply about these things.

Penda's Fen is a truly unique and intriguing entry in the Play for Today series. This slightly eerie film serves as a metaphor for a young man's journey to accept his sexuality. The fact that it was shot on film, rather than tape like many other old BBC productions, adds to its atmospheric quality and allows viewers to appreciate its stunning cinematography. Watching it in crystal-clear HD is an added bonus, making it feel like a captivating 70s horror film. I highly recommend giving this thought-provoking piece a watch.
