The book "Regeneration" by Pat Barker takes place in Craiglockhart War Hospital, Scotland, during 1917. It follows the story of army psychiatrist William Rivers who is treating soldiers suffering from shellshock. Among his patients are poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, as well as mute Billy Prior. Dr. Rivers's job is to help these men recover enough to return to the front lines of war. However, as he gets closer to healing their minds, it becomes more difficult for him to make decisions about sending them back to fight. This novel explores the brutality and trauma experienced by a generation of young men during World War I.
