Riddick [DVD]

If you enjoyed the first 2 films, then I recommend getting this one. The first half is great as Riddick fights for survival in the wilderness. However, the second half lacks proper funding and resources, which is a shame because this type of film requires heavy backing to truly showcase special effects, planet environments, hardware, and space travel. Personally, I really loved the alien dog. Riddick and the dog make a brilliant team - a lone warrior relying on animal instincts partnering with an evolved predator to survive in a harsh environment. They should have kept the dog (maybe even added more) and improved the script instead. Overall, I give it 4 stars for the dog's performance.

This movie is incredibly fun, although it does tug at the heartstrings. Surprisingly, it is really good! I'm especially glad I watched the extras. At the start of the film, you might think Mr. Vin Diesel waited too long to do this movie - he doesn't look as fit as he did in the first or second one. However, there's a twist... He intentionally wanted to look that way because the story begins with him being older and out of shape after being at the top for too long. The film follows his journey to rediscover his roots and become a hardcore survivor once again. Along the way, he encounters other interesting story points that you will likely appreciate. It has a similar feel to Pitch Black, with its landscapes and wildlife fitting perfectly into the narrative.
