DreamWorks Animation |
I believe this film surpasses '12 Years A Slave' in quality. Michael Fassbender consistently delivers exceptional performances, although 'Hunger' may be an exception. Director Steve McQueen understands how to bring out the best in Fassbender, evident in his portrayal of a lonely professional struggling with relationships and resorting to self-pleasure. However, I diverge from the character when he begins exploring brothels and experimenting with different sexual orientations. Despite this, I find myself relating more to him than to Solomon Northup. Fassbender's commendable acting skills shine through both in this film and '12 Years A Slave', deserving recognition with Academy Award nominations for both roles.
In McQueen's 'Shame', there is a powerful scene where Brandon, played by Fassbender, waits in the dimly lit lobby of his upscale NYC apartment building. He knows that upstairs, his vulnerable sister will be engaging in sexual acts with his promiscuous boss. The atmosphere is suffocating, with soft furniture and minimal lighting creating an eerie ambiance. This film delves into the inner worlds of its characters, revealing personal prisons and unspoken layers. It explores a locked darkness that never sees the light. Rather than focusing on voyeurism, 'Shame' presents a modern tale of profound bleakness that justifies its 18 certificate for its depiction of emptiness.
