In the film "Sinister," true crime writer Ellison Oswalt discovers Super 8 footage in his new home's attic, revealing a horrifying massacre of its previous residents. As he watches the film, he unknowingly releases an ancient pagan deity whose sole mission is to corrupt and transform young individuals into murderous maniacs. Although Scott Derrickson's movie doesn't introduce groundbreaking elements, it excels as a genre piece by skillfully constructing tension. The protagonist gradually realizes that both he and his family are in grave peril, yet powerless to prevent the impending danger.
Warning: Do not watch this alone late at night unless you want to be terrified. Unlike many modern horror films that rely on gore and lack a compelling story, Sinister stands out with its superb acting, particularly from Ethan Hawke who carries the film. You won't get bored as you follow him unraveling the mysterious movie clips he discovers. I won't spoil the plot, but be prepared for moments of sheer terror, especially if you have surround sound. Just make sure not to hold any hot drinks because you will definitely jump out of your seat. In summary, don't miss this genuinely scary film with excellent performances from the entire cast, especially considering it's only around three pounds.
Side Effects suggests it may touch on the topics of 'big pharma' and the rise in anti-depressant usage. However, these themes merely serve as a backdrop to a well-crafted yet somewhat predictable thriller. The film gives off a sense of familiarity, even for those who haven't seen it before. With its talented director and cast, it delivers quality content but ultimately left me wanting more.
