I purchased the vinyl release of this album in 1986. Over time, I stopped using vinyl and opted for the 1998 Remaster instead. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience as the sound quality was poor - muddy with barely audible drums and inconsistent bass levels. It was unlistenable, sounding metallic and far from the original recording.
In hopes of recapturing the essence of the original vinyl but with improved clarity, I decided to try out the 2015 Remaster. To my delight, it exceeded my expectations. The drums are now present and clear, while the bass is centered and doesn't overpower the mix. Additionally, the guitars no longer sound metallic or shrill.
This remastered version has truly impressed me and stands as one of the best examples of enhancing an already superb album. I can now enjoy listening to it without any frustration or discomfort - even surpassing my enjoyment of the original vinyl release by a significant margin.
It took some time for me to fully appreciate it, but this album is truly exceptional. Interestingly, fans have selected this as the one Maiden will perform at their gigs next year (2023), and fortunately, we have tickets to attend.
I was 14 years old when this album came out in 1986 and it quickly became one of my favorites. Although "Killers" was the first Iron Maiden album I bought, I instantly connected with the heavy yet melodic sound of "Somewhere in Time." The addition of guitar synths added an extra layer of grandeur to the music. My top tracks from this album are Caught Somewhere in Time, Wasted Years, Heaven Can Wait, Stranger in a Strange Land, and my personal favorite Maiden song of all time, Alexander The Great. The other songs on the album are also decent. In my opinion, this is a top-notch album from the greatest metal band ever. Owning this gem will definitely enhance your record collection!
