The heronarrator of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is Holden Caulfield, a sixteen-year-old native New Yorker. Through circumstances that prevent us from fully understanding him, Holden leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and embarks on a three-day journey through the underground of New York City. Holden is a complex character, and it is difficult to make a definitive statement about him or his story. However, one thing is certain: Holden is deeply drawn to beauty, almost hopelessly so.
Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of both pain and pleasure. But like most lovers, clowns, and poets of the highest order, he keeps the majority of his pain to himself, giving away the pleasure with all his heart. It is there for the reader to take and cherish, if they can bear it.
