Brand MOTOWN
Motown was founded in Detroit, Michigan, by Berry Gordy Jr. in 1959. The company was originally named Tamla Records, after the Motown sound, a type of soul music. The company's first hit was Barrett Strong's 1959 song "Money (That's What I Want)". In the early 1960s, Motown signed Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations. The company's roster later expanded to include Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Four Tops, and the Commodores. Motown was sold to MCA in 1988, and Gordy retired from the company in 1993.
