The novel, "The Long War: (Long Earth 2)," takes place a generation after the events of the first book in the series, "The Long Earth." In this new world, humanity has expanded across multiple Earths through the process of stepping, which allows people to travel between parallel worlds. As a result, airships now connect the various stepping worlds and have facilitated trade and cultural exchange.
Mankind is changing the Long Earth, but the Long Earth is also changing mankind. A new continent, called Valhalla, has emerged more than a million steps away from Datum Earth, and it is growing increasingly restless under the control of the government based on the original Earth. Meanwhile, the trolls, graceful hive-minded humanoids native to the Long Earth, are starting to react to humanity's thoughtless exploitation of their world.
Joshua, now a married man, is called upon by Lobsang to deal with several crises that threaten to plunge the Long Earth into a war unlike any humanity has ever experienced before. The novel explores themes of colonization, environmentalism, and the impact of technology on society while continuing the story of the characters introduced in the first book.
