The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion is a collection of myths and legends that serve as a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's famous The Lord of the Rings series. It provides an account of the Elder Days, or the First Age of Middle-earth, when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, lived in Middle-earth and the High Elves waged war against him to regain possession of the Silmarils, jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.

The book is divided into several sections, including the Ainulindale, which tells the story of the creation of the world, and the Valaquenta, which describes the nature and powers of each of the gods. The Akallabeth recounts the downfall of Numenor, a great island kingdom that existed during the Second Age, while Of the Rings of Power provides an overview of the events leading up to the end of the Third Age, as depicted in The Lord of the Rings.

The Silmarillion is a must-read for fans of Tolkien's work, as it provides important background information on the history and mythology of Middle-earth that informs the events of The Lord of the Rings series.
