This is a review of the Strawberry Media version of 2012, which is labeled as the "First time on DVD". However, there have been previous overseas versions available. The print quality of this version seems to have been borrowed from the British Film Institute and is not a BFI restored version, resulting in some inconsistencies. In terms of overall quality, there is no significant difference between this release and the Region 4-only Magna Pacific version from 2003. Moving on to the film itself, Conrad Veidt delivers a compelling performance as a World War 1 German U-Boat submarine commander tasked with spying on British naval activities near the Orkney Islands. Valerie Hobson portrays his contact in an engaging manner. The characters are well-developed and go beyond being mere symbols, adding depth to the story. The plot itself is quite good. I would rate the film 5 stars but only give the DVD 3 stars due to its shortcomings in print quality.
