I found it slightly disappointing because this DVD is the edited/cut/censored version, missing at least 8 minutes compared to the uncut VHS tape which I have seen and consider brilliant. That's why I gave it 4 stars.
As an Irish person, I can vouch for the genuine portrayal of the characters and their interactions in this film. However, it should be noted that the use of strong language commonly used by the Irish for emphasis, rather than aggression, was not depicted on screen due to cultural sensitivities at that time. The movie explores themes of friendship and how it can be influenced by money and joint business ventures. Additionally, it offers intriguing insights into sociological dynamics within boss-worker relationships. Above all, this film strikes a perfect balance between humor and poignancy.
I absolutely adored Roddy Doyle's book, and surprisingly, I believe the film does it justice. Set in the 1990s, it explores a unique friendship between two unemployed men who venture into the burger and chips business with a hilarious mishap involving their van's engine. As their friendship faces challenges, I won't spoil what happens next. This film is refreshingly non-Hollywood, blending humor and sadness flawlessly. The screenplay by Doyle is brilliantly written, making it a movie worth watching repeatedly.
