I admired Trumbo for his stoicism and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. It was a time of immense hardship for many, with censorship dictating who could work in Hollywood. After watching the film, my admiration for Trumbo and his remarkable achievements in the face of adversity will always remain with me.
This well-written and well-cast drama explores the events that unfolded during the post-war paranoia in Hollywood. Similar to the Salem witch trials, this time it is Communism that becomes the scapegoat, causing innocent individuals like award-winning author and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (played by Bryan Cranston) to suffer. The film sheds light on how Trumbo and his family faced public humiliation and disgrace, particularly at the hands of powerful figures in Hollywood such as columnist Hedda Hopper (portrayed by Helen Mirren), a staunch anti-communist, and John Wayne. However, with dignity and determination, Trumbo gradually rebuilds his career and their lives. This compelling story was one that deserved to be told.
