The 1972 BBC series, featuring Sir Anthony Hopkins, delved deeply into Tolstoy's novel but had a slow pace. In contrast, the 2016 BBC series moves faster and although some characters are missing, it is overall a superior production. However, the casting of American actor Paul Dano as Pierre is disappointing as he fails to capture the gravitas of the character. If you have read and enjoyed War and Peace, I recommend watching both versions and forming your own opinion.
I was initially attracted to this version because of James Norton, and I must admit it's the first one I've seen. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The casting was excellent, with great characters and costumes. The storytelling was also captivating. I've watched it twice now and highly recommend giving it a watch.
