While the picture and sound quality may not always be fantastic, especially in the earlier episodes, the stories themselves are timeless. Additionally, some of the social commentary remains shockingly relevant even today.
If you were around in the 70's, you'll definitely remember this series. We recently revisited it and were pleasantly surprised. While it may not have the flashy sets of today's shows, the acting (especially James Bolam) and storyline more than make up for it. We enjoyed every minute of it! It's definitely worth watching again, especially for those who are 60+ and can give younger generations a taste of what life was like in the 1920's and 30's.
This series effectively captures the essence of working class life in the North East during the interwar years, reminiscent of Coronation Street. James Bolam delivers a superb performance, and there are also many other impressive performances from the rest of the cast. While the first episode may be slow, it is worth sticking with as the storylines develop in later episodes and the characters' unique traits become more engaging for viewers. If you enjoy nostalgia, this series will not disappoint. The only reason I have given it 4 stars instead of 5 is because Acorn Media has mislabeled the DVDs in series four, making it difficult to watch them in chronological order without referring to individual episode titles on the box. It would be helpful if Acorn Media numbered these discs consistently with previous series. ACORN MEDIA PLEASE TAKE NOTE
