The X-Men movies suffered a setback with X3: the Last Stand's mishandling of the Dark Phoenix saga. However, First Class marks a strong return for the franchise. The film showcases Young Magneto and Professor X assembling the X-Men to confront the Hellfire Club amidst the Cuban Missile Crisis. This seemingly unconventional premise surprisingly works well. Fassbender and Macavoy successfully step into the roles previously portrayed by McKellen and Stewart, delivering impressive performances. The dynamic between these two characters is particularly enjoyable. One minor criticism is that we don't have enough time to witness their friendship fully develop, which later films heavily rely on. Nonetheless, this decision was likely necessary for maintaining consistency within the film timeline. Despite this drawback, First Class offers great acting, an engaging storyline, and thrilling action sequences. It also provides a refreshing departure from typical MCU-style movies by taking a more serious approach.
