This is the best interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream that I have ever seen. The cast is wonderful, and the use of light bulbs and umbrellas adds a dreamy touch to the production. It appeals to audiences of all ages, as my 12-year-old easily understood the plot and found many parts funny. Oberon and Puck were especially well-portrayed and my child loved them. Desmond Barrit gives an outstanding performance as Bottom, although he can be quite rude in this version. The entire group of rude mechanicals is so talented that you almost wish they had their own separate show.
This was my first time watching a Shakespeare play without reading it beforehand, and I was a bit nervous. I had read some reviews mentioning the lack of subtitles, but luckily my DVD had them. Despite not knowing much about the play and having a bad memory for faces, it didn't affect my enjoyment. The magic of the performance was undeniable, especially with the inclusion of the little boy as a spectator. It made me feel like we were both peeking into an imaginary world without being noticed.
Unlike some plays, I would definitely watch this one again and probably enjoy it even more. Some reviews mentioned its PG rating, but honestly, the "naughty" scenes were so mild and brief that young kids wouldn't even notice or would just find them funny and forget about them.
I also thought the ending of the play was really special and left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. But then again, I'm just a hopeless romantic!
