My mother, an early fan of Catherine Cookson, took me to see this film when it was released. We're from South Shields, so you can imagine her disappointment when she discovered it was set in Dublin instead of Tyneside. However, I have always remembered it fondly, especially the theme song. Now, 60 years later, I still enjoy it just as much as I did back then. In fact, I've already watched it twice today. Unfortunately, films like this are not well-suited for modern audiences. They require a certain age and appreciation to truly love them.
Set in Dublin but filmed at Pinewood, this film is a delightful piece of whimsy with charming performances. John Gregson is always amiable and Noel Purcell, sporting an unusual clean-shaven look, provides excellent comic support. Barry Fitzgerald once again portrays the lovable and cantankerous older character in this lovely and evocative movie. Overall, it is a true delight to watch.
I got this at a great price, so I can be generous with my rating. It's a charming romantic comedy set in 1950s Dublin, a city I hope to visit someday. John Gregson is excellent as the thoughtful dustman who plays hurling and tries to avoid his amorous landlady. Muriel Pavlow, playing a 'plain' Cinderella type, quietly adds depth to the story. The plot may not sound exciting, but it's adapted nicely from Catherine Cookson's story and brought to life by Gregson and a talented cast of Irish actors including Barry Fitzgerald, Noel Purcell, Liam Redmond, and Jack McGowran. Their acting and speech rhythms were like music to my ears - reminiscent of walking through Dublin with James Joyce. So sit back, pour yourself some Guinness, and enjoy this film (good black and white print with clear sound but no subtitles).
